The loss of our Lieutenant Ervin Larry Oakes has severely grieved the City of Mount Vernon and the Mount Vernon Fire Department.

Ervin “Larry” Oakes, better known by his stage name “Oak Tree,” was born and reared in Mount Vernon. Prior to joining The Mount Vernon Fire Department in 1993, he served his country as a Marine.

On Ladder 3 at Station #3, Ervin spent the most of his career as a Truck Company Fire Fighter. On March 31, 2017, “Brother Oakes” was promoted to the position of Fire Lieutenant, and on September 13, 2023, he would have reached the milestone of 30 years of service.
